Dear Liam,
You are such a soccer superstar! You only have one week of soccer left, which makes me a bit sad for you, because I know you enjoy it so much. Last week, you scored five goals! (And those five goals were all the goals your team scored.) I love to see your enthusiasm out on the field, and I love to see how well you work as a team with your teammates.
School is going well. You had pinkeye last week, which caused you to miss a day of school. Daddy and I had your parent-teacher conference, and Mrs. Gromer said you are doing SO well. She said that you are "all boy," and that is just fine! You're reading well, and math is going great too. I couldn't be prouder of you.
We went to see Grandma and Grandpa a couple weeks ago, and you and Libby stayed overnight there for three whole nights without me. You told me that you were the big brother and helped Libby feel comfortable, since she'd never been away from Mommy and Daddy overnight before. I know that you had a great time, especially since Uncle David and Uncle Brian came and got to spend time with you.
I love you, sweet boy.

Settling in to the new normal
Dear Liam,
Well, you are now on week SIX of kindergarten. How is this possible?! I think that you are really loving it, and before and after care too. I love hearing about your day each evening. Your reading is improving- your confidence as you read really shines through now. I love it! You seem to be friends with everyone. I'm so glad that everything is going so well. You seem to do well on the worksheets and assignments you've brought home. Like me when I was your age, I can tell that you rush through things sometimes, because you think it's easy... and then you make careless mistakes. Take your time, sweet boy!
You started soccer again last night. This year, in the 5-6 year old group, you actually get to play short games. You were the first one to score a goal last night! I love seeing the pure joy in your face as you run and dribble the ball. I just like to see you doing something you really enjoy.
You already have your first classmate's birthday party coming up this weekend. You picked out a Lego set for him obviously. I hope he actually likes Legos. Ha!
I love you, my sweet boy.
Love,
Mommy

First day of kindergarten!
Dear Liam,
Today is your first day of kindergarten! I can hardly believe it! Daddy and I walked you to school this morning, which is something I'll always remember. We took you to your classroom, where you found your nametag, grabbed a pencil from your cubby, and sat down at a desk and got to work on a dot-to-dot... and we left. I'm amazed that I didn't cry. I was close, but I didn't! I'm so excited to hear all about it tonight, after I pick you up from after-care. Tomorrow morning you'll start going to before-care for awhile each day. I wish I could walk you to school every day.
Your last day at daycare was Friday. That was much harder for me than today. I'm okay with new beginnings; it's endings that I don't like! I started to tear up when I dropped you off that morning, and then I totally cried when I picked you up in the afternoon. You were so ready to go though! You've just acted like all of this completely doesn't even affect you! You've been there since you were 13 weeks old. You've been there basically your whole life! As we walked out the door, all the kids yelled, "bye Liam!" and I totally burst into tears. You just kept walking towards the door. I guess you're ready to move on to bigger and better things. You're such a brave boy.
I love you, sweetheart. I hope today is going well, and I can't wait to see you tonight.

Mommy

Soon...
Dear Liam,
You will be starting kindergarten sooooo soon! Just 3.5 weeks to go. INSANE. I still can't even believe that school is starting on freaking August 4. That's just too early! You've been very emotional lately, and although you say you're excited about kindergarten, I think you're also kind of freaking out, even if you don't admit it. I don't blame you! You've been at the same daycare since you were 13 weeks old. Going to a new school will be a huge change! I know you are going to have a great time though.
Baseball finished about a month ago. You LOVED it. I loved watching you play. There were lots of rained out games, but most of them were made up. You all took turns playing all the different positions. I know that you enjoyed being the "squatter." You were definitely one of the best players on your team. I was so proud of you.
I just can't believe how quickly the summer is flying by. We haven't even been to the pool yet. You and Libby have run through the sprinkler in the yard a couple times, and you both loved it. Maybe we can try to get to the pool this weekend...
I love you, sweet boy.

All signed up!
Dear Liam,
You are now all signed up for kindergarten! How is this possible?! We went to the kindergarten open house last week. You loved looking the three classrooms, and you really want to be in the one that had a few bins of Legos. Ha! You also got to see the gym and cafeteria, the music room, the art room, and the library. We've gone to play on the playground there a few times too. Only a few more months! Amazing!
Legos are pretty much the most important thing to you. Whenever you're indoors, you're playing Legos. The Easter bunny just happened to have brought you Legos too. You love to put together your sets, but you also really like to take the pieces apart and be a "master builder" and build amazing other things. You told me yesterday that you "like Legos because they're for being creative." Exactly. Right on, sweetheart.
Tomorrow is your first baseball game. I cannot wait to see you in your uniform. I just may die from the cuteness. It will be a very short game- I'm guessing each team will only get up to bat once. I know you're going to love it. Grandma and Grandpa will be here to see you too, which is great!
I love you, sweet boy.

Not possible...
Dear Liam,
Next week, kindergarten registration starts. Um, what?! You can't possibly be old enough to be starting kindergarten! We talk about kindergarten quite often, and for awhile now, you've been kind of scared. I totally understand, sweet boy. You've been in your daycare since you were 13 weeks old, and you've been with most of the same kids that whole time. You will have all new friends, in a new building. This morning, though, I said that we will go there for an open house in a few weeks, and someone will show us around, and you said, "I'm so excited for kindergarten, Mommy!" You have no idea how relieved this made me feel. I can't even believe that the start of kindergarten is only a little over four months from now (since it starts ridiculously early in August). I know that you are going to love it. You will be there for before and after care too, and when I told you that you'll get to play in the gym probably during those times, you got really excited. You asked if you'd get to choose activities, and I said yes, I think you probably will get to choose during before and after care. You also asked if you'd still have "group," which I couldn't really answer, since I don't really even get what "group" is. But, I'm guessing that yes, you'll probably have something very similar to "group" in your kindergarten classroom.
You are still completely obsessed with Legos. Mainly Lego Chima, but you're starting to ask to watch Lego Ninjago too now. I'm not a big fan of Ninjago... too much fighting and too many weapons. Last night, you talked to me nonstop for over 10 minutes about Chima. I don't know how you remember all that stuff! In between each thought, you'd say, "and Mommy, guess what?" and you'd then continue to talk. It was adorable, yet at the same time, it took all my power to not bust out laughing numerous times. You are just so obsessed!
I love you, sweet boy.

Crazy
Dear Liam,
It's almost time to sign you up for baseball! Real baseball! Well, it's coach pitch, and kids use a tee if they can't hit it after a certain number of pitches... but for the most part, it's real baseball. Crazy! How can you possibly be five years old, and ready for this?! I can't wait. You are going to kick butt! Practices will start at the beginning of April. I have a feeling that you are going to LOVE it. I can't imagine that you wouldn't! We will have to get you cleats and white baseball pants. You are going to be so freaking adorable.
I hope that you're able to play and remember that it's a game, and not get mad at the kids who don't know the rules as well as you do. I also hope that you're both a gracious winner and loser. Right now, when we play games at home, if you don't win, it is NOT pretty. Even if you start to "lose" in the middle of a game, watch out. The whining... oh my goodness... the whining. And the drama. It's just too much. You want to play Sorry or Uno or checkers almost every night, and while I love to play games with you and I love that you're not watching a TV show, man... sometimes your behavior makes me NOT want to play games. You just get so worked up, and then it's hard to get you to calm down to go to sleep. I know that it's a phase, and that you just need to learn that you won't win every single time, but for right now, well, it's just no fun at all.
I love you, sweet boy.

5 years old!
Dear Liam,
You are now five years old. THIS IS CRAZY TO ME! I took the day off for your birthday, and we spent the day together. We went to Target (to look at toys, of course), went to a movie (Walking with Dinosaurs), got a Happy Meal from McDonald's for lunch (your choice), and played at home in the afternoon. You had a birthday party the next day with three of your friends from school- Foster, Ethan, and Ayden. You boys had so much fun! The amount of noise four boys can make is astounding, but I'm glad you had a good time.
We then ended up having an unexpected five day weekend, instead of just a three day weekend (since your birthday was on a Friday). The campus was closed on both Monday and Tuesday, for extreme cold and snow, and your daycare was closed, too. We had such a great time together. This gave you lots of time to play with all the toys you'd received for Christmas and your birthday. We were definitely a bit stircrazy by the end!
You are starting to read, and it's amazing to me. You read all of Hop on Pop a few nights ago, without very much help from me. When we finished it, you said, "Mommy, let's never stop reading books." I admit that I started to cry. I love that you love to read, and I hope that that never ends.
Love you, sweet boy,
Mommy
